ON this special day, we embrace our diverse heritage and unite as one to give thanks to all those around us. Since the novel coronavirus, we have faced many great uncertainties, but our community has stayed united with strong a commitment to get through these difficult times. As a CNMI of caring and concerned people, we always share one common goal to build a peaceful community we call home. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we must remember to make that extra effort to help those in need and continue to encourage each other to remain positive and to hold our heads up high. The strength of our island comes from you, the people, and we are thankful for having a community of active and supportive citizens.

KUDOS to Kilili, as the National Apprenticeship Act of 2020 just gave the CNMI a great opportunity to take a big step in addressing the “Federal Workforce Transition Requirement” that we can’t ignore.  The CNMI is still virtually doing the same things we were doing in the past to transition our workforce, which is a scatter-brain effort with no real system-wide (systemic) plan. We were just fortunate that the late Mr. Pellegrino started the Trade Institute that was a start but we need a Systemic Plan led by the CNMI Government & PSS to address the entire workforce transitioning. We’re almost two years-in since the mandate to transition our workforce and the Torres Administration has yet to come up with a Systemic Plan. It also seems me that PSS doesn’t want to listen or even discuss the Program but hopefully this Federally Funded Apprenticeship Program will give rise for the Torres Administration or the next Legislature & PSS to seriously reconsider the Public Service Program given there is nothing else in the works.

HAGÅTÑA — To be completely honest, I try very hard on a daily basis to shake my cynicisms, therefore I am constantly on the lookout for good, heart warming news. Alas, there is no such thing; one is hard-pressed to find a regular dose of warm and fuzzy at the moment.

THE CNMI is facing a change in eligibility and a reduction in benefits due to inaction by Congress to provide the necessary funding to maintain current income eligibility and benefit levels.  Funding for the Nutrition Assistance Program or NAP is determined only by the U.S. Congress.  The need for additional funding to support current eligibility and benefits has been on congressman Sablan’s table for several years now.  The CNMI NAP, my administration, and the USDA Food and Nutritional Service or FNS has been providing data to our Congressman’s office related to the funding needs.  The administration has requested updates on actions related to securing the funding necessary, without response.  The congressional office also received responses to letters of inquiry that it has sent, which included detailed information about NAP food assistance needs.

THAT'S her local as well as her on-line nickname.  Liang-Rose.  She liked that nickname.  Liang-Rose, my wife.  Whenever she would send me an e-mail from California, it's Lian-Rose.  Her real name was Rosalia Tenorio Sablan. And even on Facebook, she would write to me, or to her friends, about her likes and dislikes.  It was still Liang-Rose.  She would write about her views on life as she experienced it.  She would write about our kids and the “grands” and how she loved them.  They were the joy and happiness in her life.  She would write to them and would ask them “how are they doing.”  Her visiting them is like visiting “Camelot.”  It was a joy seeing them.
